She has been gardening and growing plants for over 40 years. After qualifying with a degree in landscape horticulture from University College Dublin\, she worked as a college lecturer at the National Botanic Gardens in Glasnevin\, Dublin for several years before joining South Dublin County Council as a Parks Superintendent. Over a period of almost 20 years in local authority\, she held varying responsibilities in management and development of public parks and street tree management. She is a Past President and former Executive Director of the Tree Council of Ireland. Mary is now self-employed in the running of Gash Gardens & Nursery\, where she enjoys sharing her enthusiasm for plants with visitors and specialises in growing interesting and unusual plants. She also works as a garden writer\, lecturer\, Tidy Towns adjudicator and horticultural consultant. As a long-time\, regular columnist\, and more recently as editor\, with the Irish Garden magazine\, Mary writes and lectures on a wide range of garden topics conveying her very practical\, hands-on and down to earth approach to plants and gardening.
